JOSE ANGEL MANGAS, a Cuban-American artist, was born in Havana, Cuba in 1953. A son of spaniards and a twin. He left Cuba in 1962 at the age of nine and began his new life in the United States.

He started painting in 1977 after a diving accident in 1972 put him in a wheelchair. Inspired by a fellow artist, Jose took to the canvas, taking a still-life class in oils at the Miami Art Museum. He took art history, figure drawing, and received an Associate of Science degree in design from Miami-Dade Community College in 1984. He also went on to receive a design degree at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City in 1986. Inspired by the works of Chagall, Picasso,Van Gogh and others, his works have progressed into his own original expressionistic form. His paintings can be found in north and south America as well as in Europe.
